Mayor & Council
Message from the Mayor of Black River-Matheson Black River-Matheson is the keystone community of Northeastern Ontario. We like to refer to our community as "The North's CENTRE du nord". Situated at the junction of highways #11 and #101, we are right in the center, approximately 70 kilometers from Timmins, Kirkland Lake, Cochrane, Quebec's Rouyn - Noranda - Val D'or mining region and only 45 kilometers south of Iroquois Falls. Black River-Matheson is in the midst of an upswing in business growth spearheaded by our local mining industry. Not only do we have a number of mining extraction and exploration activities, but we are also developing a secondary mining manufacturing industry that will serve the needs of mining companies in the region and across Canada. Our "unfair advantage" in marketing terms is the fact that we are situated in the center of one of the world's most productive gold and base metal mining regions. Our community spirit, one that reflects sharing and caring for citizens and strangers alike, is reflected in the smiles, handshakes and greetings when first meeting visitors or when friends meet. For those who love the outdoors and all that it offers, Black River-Matheson is a nature lover's paradise. Our 150+ lakes and rivers, lakes dug out by glaciers millennia ago, and our 300,000+ acres provide beautiful sandy beaches, excellent fishing, boating, hiking, and camping opportunites. For those who prefer more challenging activities, take a canoe trip along the Black River to the Abitibi and Moose Rivers to James Bay, a 12-day trip that one will long remember. As Mayor, I would like to extend my most sincere welcome. Stay for a while and enjoy all that we have to offer. Better still, move lock, stock and barrel into our town; start a business, bring your friends! All are welcome. On a further positive note, Black River-Matheson has one of the lowest tax rates in Northeastern Ontario!
